A comedy produced by Columbia Pictures in 1993, and starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell, Groundhog Day is a film that celebrates love and goodness towards others. It is an excellent movie for celebrating Groundhog Day and a great way to spend a fun movie night.
A New Look at Groundhog Day
Phil Connors (Bill Murray) is a somewhat cynical and self-absorbed weatherman for a local station and is sent every Groundhog Day to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to cover the small community’s events for the day. A coming snow storm delays Phil along with the station’s producer, Rita (Andie MacDowell), and cameraman, Larry (Chris Elliott), overnight.
As he holds on to his disdain for the Groundhog Day events and the town, Phil finds himself trapped in a time loop, repeating the same day over and over. As Groundhog Day repeats itself, Phil learns to acknowledge his admiration for Rita, and determines to find out what he needs to do to make time run properly once again. Bill Murray is a comedic hit in the role of Phil, and his counterpart, Andie Macdowell, plays her part as lovely as ever.
Fun Romantic Comedy and Life Lessons
Groundhog Day is movie that mixes fun comedy with romance and a little bit of a life lesson. With nothing better to do than plan to try harder tomorrow, Phil learns to strive throughout the movie to make that one day that he relives better than the last time he lived it.
The story follows all the ups and downs that Phil faces while repeating Groundhog Day, including kidnapping a famous groundhog, attempted suicide, sharing a meal with a homeless man, and wooing his co-worker. Each day furthers his mission to get to the next, but each day, Phil learns something new that helps change his perspective, not only on Groundhog Day, but on life.
Groundhog Day is not simply a romantic comedy, but is about learning to do good for others and to make each day the best day that it can be. It shows the influence that one person can have on others when he takes enough interest, and the sweet reward for doing good for the benefit of someone else.
As Groundhog Day looks forward to a new season every February, the Groundhog Day movie encourages a new “season” of life by depicting a man who must learn something new to continue with his own life. It is an enjoyable movie for comedy and chick flick lovers alike.
