For amateur writers wishing to develop better writing skills in fiction and non-fiction, consider these ideas for writing exercises that explore different writing styles.

A young writer interested in improving writing and learning different forms of writing may wish to try a few writing exercises. These suggestions are just a few of the kinds of writing that can help an author practise good writing.

Exploring Fiction Writing Styles

Write short stories in different genres. Try to explore different fiction writing styles by creating samples of these ideas.

Try an adventure story. Adventure is pleasing to many and can be an interesting way to better fiction writing skills. Often in adventure stories, something out of the ordinary happens to ordinary people.

Try a science fiction story. Science fiction may not for everyone, but it can be fun to write. A tip for writing science fiction: watch science fiction shows. Reading science fiction books can help a writer to understand how science fiction is written, but shows will also help with the kind of plot lines and jargon that fills science fiction stories.

Try writing a mystery story. With the amount of shows about crime and criminal investigators on television, mystery is a well liked genre. Mysteries can be about solving a serious crime much like the “Clue” game, or they can be a simple Nancy Drew type of story.

Write a fantasy story. Fantasy is ever growing in popularity and is a good way to explore the imagination. Fantasy plots, settings and characters can be a complete fabrication with extraordinary events, which makes it a very free form of writing.

Writing these different kinds of stories can help expand a writer’s abilities and help a writer find where his or her interest lies the most.

Exploring Non-Fiction Writing Types

Non-fiction writing is just as good for a creative writer as fiction writing. Try to explore different kinds of non-fiction writing by creating samples of these ideas.

Write a newspaper article or column. It does not have to be a real piece journalism or based on a real event. Take a fictional story, for instance, and choose a particular event in the story that may make it to the news. Write a news story on that event as though it were real. Consider reading the newspaper for good examples of news articles.

Write a blog post – on paper. There is no need for an actual blog for a writer to try writing a blog post. Blogs are an informal form of non-fiction writing, almost like a diary, but not usually as personal. Blogs that become well known and well liked usually have some kind of theme and offer something for readers to think about. These kinds of blogs often are professional but make some allowance for personal opinions.

Write a poem. Poetry comes in so many different forms, and is an easy way to let ideas form. Writing good poetry takes some work and practise, but for the purpose of exploring ideas, whatever comes to mind with poetry is fine.

Try these ideas to help the muses and hone good story plots and characters. These suggestions can also be fun ways to explore writing and may lead to a short story, novel or other good piece of writing.

I have already thought of a simular idea however a lengthy one, I wish to write a science fiction, romance, horror/chilling, mystery storie etc. (Genres that interest me- one of each) whilst focusing on a main idea i have. I am also focusing on discription stuff like the silkiness of water and so on but I find keeping a diary and writing poems helps too. :)
